Clear Channel Communications, the largest owner of radio stations in the country, has laid off approximately 9 percent of its work force nationwide, a total of about 1,850 jobs.
In an e-mail sent to the company's staff, Clear Channel CEO Mark Mays said the cuts are due to what he called "an unprecedented time of distress in the general economy."
The cuts were made in the company's radio stations, its outdoor advertising wing and its corporate office, Mays' e-mail said. What Mays called a significant portion of the layoffs were in sales departments.
Locally, WRVQ program director Boomer was reported to have been laid off, along with members of the sales staff. A spokeswoman did not return calls.
In Richmond, Clear Channel owns AM stations WRNL and WRVA, and FM stations WBTJ, WRVQ, WRXL and WTVR. The number of local employees was not known.
Based in San Antonio, Clear Channel owns about 1,200 radio stations in the United States, about 8 percent of the nation's total.
It also owns stations in Australia, Mexico and New Zealand, among other related ventures. -- Daniel Neman
