Circuit City Stores Inc. will eliminate as many as 1,903 positions reporting to its corporate headquarters when the retailer closes its doors for good.
About 1,500 to 1,600 of those jobs are in the Richmond area, a company spokesman said today.
Regional and district manager positions scattered throughout the country are included in the 1,903 tally.
The eliminated positions are detailed in a 17-page filing with the Governor's Office for Workforce Development.
The positions range from dispatcher to chief financial officer.
The filing shows 1,248 positions will be cut at the company's headquarters on Mayland Drive in Henrico County. This number includes the positions for the regional and district operations.
Another 342 will be eliminated from its call center near Thalbro Street.
The E-Commerce division, which manages the chain's Web site operations, accounts for 252 of the layoffs. Another 61 positions will be terminated from a department working on a new computerized cash register system.
An exact closure date has not been set, but the company said layoffs will occur by March 21 or within two weeks after, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice act filing with the state.
Dozens of employees were told earlier this week that their services were not needed. Other employees also are likely to be told in the next couple of weeks that their services are no longer needed as well.
The employees still will be paid until March 21, the company has said.
Circuit City filed for bankruptcy protection on Nov. 10 and efforts to reorganize failed, forcing the retailer to announce Jan 16. to liquidate. As of last week, the company employed 34,000 U.S. workers.
