Dominion Virginia Power wants to offer its customers the option to enroll in conservation programs that the utility company says would save about $1.2 billion in energy costs over 15 years.
The company said it filed requests with the State Corporation Commission today to implement an energy conservation plan starting next year that would include providing its customers incentives to participate in 11 different programs, such as installing energy efficient lighting and upgrading to more efficient heating systems.
Dominion also is seeking approval from the SCC to spend about $600 million installing 2.4 million "smart meters" at each of the homes and businesses the utility serves by 2013. The devices would enable the company to lower the voltage on its distribution circuits by 5 percent during non-peak hours, without affecting customers' electric service.
