Fewer Virginians will be traveling on vacation this Fourth of July holiday, AAA Mid-Atlantic said today.
The travel group expects the number of Virginia holiday travelers will be down 1.8 percent from 2008, spokeswoman Windy A. VanCuren said.
AAA said the decline in leisure travel mainly will be due uncertainty about the economy and the recent rise in gasoline prices, up 16 cents from last month.
Virginia State Police will heighten traffic enforcement during the Fourth of July weekend, with 75 percent of the force's uniformed troopers out on the state's highways, starting Friday morning, State Police Capt. Steve Chumley said.
Urging motorists to drive safely, Chumley pointed out at a roadside press conference this morning that safe driving means buckling up, obeying speed limits, avoiding distractions, driving alcoholand drugfree, and sharing the road with other vehicles.
Traffic fatalities also are down this year in the state.
As of today, 345 persons have died in crashes on Virginia roadways this year, compared with 412 at this time last year, according to the state police.
