Tips to help small-business
owners cut costs in 2010Some suggestions to small-business owners on how to take advantage of the recession and prosper in 2010:
Change office space: Commercial vacancy rates in cities across the country, including the Richmond area, are 10 percent or higher. This abundance of offices makes renting or buying space much cheaper. If moving is difficult, now is the time to negotiate prices with the owner of the building.
Benefit from reduced prices: The cost of raw materials is now lower than ever, therefore supplies can be brought in for less money. Sales can be found on everything from office furniture to supplies.
Re-evaluate your personnel: If you need to hire personnel, you may find that you can employ talent for lower wages. There are many qualified unemployed or underemployed people who are eager to work even if it means a decrease in salary.
Present programs that encourage healthy living: Your employees' good health will drive down insurance costs. Offer discounted gym memberships or provide access to counselors and nutritionists.
