Metro Business asked Christopher Howard, president of Hampden-Sydney College who recently co-authored "Money Makers: Inside the New World of Finance and Business," about the importance of studying private industry:
"First, we are nation of businesses. We are a nation of shopkeepers. The business of America is business. Innovation, technology -- the things that are going to drive our economy forward obviously come in the business sector, and a lubricant is going to be finance.
"Secondly, young people are concerned about making a difference in this world. As the millennials grow up and they go out and make a difference in the world, they will be doing it in finance and in business.
"And finally, business and finance creates the revenue and the capital that comes into the nonprofit sector. There are many sources of revenue -- government being part of it -- but lots of it actually comes from the private sector, private equity, venture capital."
