The Richmond area’s unemployment rate rose slightly in July to 8 percent from 7.9 percent in June, according to figures from the Virginia Employment Commission.
The increase in the rate represents in rise in the number of jobless people seeking work from 51,993 in June to 52,823 in July. The overall number of employed people in the region also rose by about 848 in July to 605,574 as the labor force grew.
Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7 percent in July, unchanged from June but higher than the July 2009 rate of 6.9 percent, the VEC reported earlier this month.
