Byron E. Howlett, president and chief executive officer of Richmond Heritage Federal Credit Union, will retire next Friday.
Howlett was elected to the position in 1992 of what was then the Richmond Teachers Federal Credit Union.
The credit union was charted in 1937 to provide employees and family members of the Richmond City School Board and Virginia Union University a means to save and borrow money. The field of membership has expanded to include the Metropolitan Business League, Association Education Services Corporation of Virginia, Richmond Community Bon Secours Hospitals and people working, living or worshiping in the Blackwell, Manchester and Swansboro communities.
The credit union at 50 W. Commerce Road is the oldest African-American owned financial institution in Richmond.
Howlett is the second president and CEO in the credit union’s history. His replacement has not been named.
