Honors for Feb. 6

Dana A. Dews, associate attorney at Capital One Financial Corp. in the Richmond area, has been given the Emerson G. Spies Award from the Virginia Bar Association. The award is given for exceptional leadership within the bar association to a lawyer under age 37 or who has been licensed to practice law for less than three years.

Rudene Mercer Bascom Haynes, partner at Hunton & Williams in Richmond, has been given the Sandra P. Thompson Award from the Virginia Bar Association. The award is given for exceptional leadership within the bar association.

Danielle Gibson, a service adviser in CarMax's Charlottesville store, has been given the CarMax Cares Community Service Award. Gibson received the award for coordinating blood drives, toy drives and food drives. As a result of her award, the CarMax Foundation will make a $5,000 grant to the Central Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross, the nonprofit that Gibson chose.

Melissa Golden, sales operations manager at CarMax's corporate offices in Goochland County, has been given the CarMax Cares Community Service Award from CarMax. Golden has served as president, secretary and fundraising chair for the Henrico Humane Society. As a result of her award, the CarMax Foundation will make a $5,000 grant to the Henrico Humane Society, the nonprofit that Golden chose.

Elizabeth G. Hester has been selected by the Virginia Law Foundation to its Fellows Class of 2012. This honor is conferred on Virginia lawyers of integrity and character who are outstanding in their profession and their communities. She is with Kaufman & Canoles.

Jory Brinkerhoff, assistant professor of biology at the University of Richmond, has been given a $25,000 research award from the Thomas F. Jeffress and Kate Miller Jeffress Memorial Trust of Richmond, for his research on the emergence of Lyme disease in Virginia. The trust supports basic scientific research in chemical, medical or other scientific fields through grants to educational and research institutions.

Stephanie Spurlock has been given the Associate of the Year award from the Home Builders Association of Southside Virginia. She is with Mid South Building Supply.

Hoy Beverley has been given the Builder of the Year award from the Home Builders Association of Southside Virginia He also received the Big Spike and Patriot awards. He is with Hoy N. Beverley Inc.

Lisa Germano has been inducted as a fellow by the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel Board of Governors. Fellows must have a minimum of 20 years experience, be nominated by two fellows and successfully complete a formal review process. She is with the Actuarial Benefits & Design Co.
