Owens & Minor Inc. is making several management changes effective March 1, as the company undertakes several initiatives to improve and modernize its distribution infrastructure.

Among the changes, the Hanover County-based medical products distributor said Wednesday that it is promoting its executive vice president and chief financial officer, James L. Bierman, to an expanded role as executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Bierman, who joined Owens & Minor in 2007, will lead the company's field sales and operations. He will retain responsibility for global sourcing and product management, and he will continue his primary role in the company's investor relations' department.

The company said its executive vice president and chief operating officer, Charles C. Colpo, will become senior vice president for operations.

Colpo will lead the company's strategic initiatives to improve and modernize its core distribution business infrastructure. That includes implementing a significant three-year project to transform the company's information technology systems. Colpo joined Owens & Minor in 1981.

The company said it will conduct a search for a new chief financial officer.

D. Andrew Edwards, Owens & Minor's vice president, controller and chief accounting officer, will serve as interim chief financial officer. Edwards joined the company in 2009.

"These leadership changes are consistent with other changes we have made in recent months to better align our organization with our strategic initiatives and strategic performance goals," Craig R. Smith, the company's president and CEO, said Wednesday.
