Career: vice president of human resources, Philips Healthcare, Seattle; regional director human resources for AsiaPacific, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, Singapore; human resources generalist, Black & Decker, Towson, Md.

Best career move: "The transition into the international not-for-profit sector. Taking on global responsibilities and having a clear line of sight to making a real difference in people's lives left a significant impression on me."

Career goals: "I now feel I have largely achieved my career goals, being in a global leadership role, where I am able to positively influence the overall employee experience, in a highly reputable and respected organization that I am proud to be a part of."

The most difficult situation faced on the job: "When I have had to terminate employees. Whether it has been one employee or 1,000 and whether due to performance, reorganization or economic downturn, for me this has been my most difficult responsibility."

Career tip for students: "Learn to work with people. … Learn a second language; spend time in another country; and read about other cultures, religions and societies.."

What motivates him? "Working across cultural boundaries. This includes not only working in different countries but also working in diverse teams with people who have various styles and approaches to working, communicating and decision making."

Family: wife and two sons

The most memorable book: "Real-life adventure documentaries, such as 'Into Thin Air' by Jon Krakauer and 'Shackleton' by Roland Huntford."

Ideal vacation: "A quiet beach with plenty of water activities for the kids (and with good Internet access so I don't stress out about not knowing what's going on at work.)"
