The U.S. Postal Service today said it is closing its Norfolk processing and distribution center and transferring those operations to the center in the eastern Henrico County community of Sandston.
The Postal Service said no date has been set for the move from Norfolk to Sandston, which it said grew out of studies initiated five months ago. There was no immediate indication how many jobs would be lost in Norfolk or gained in Sandston.
The Postal Service has experienced a 25 percent decline in first-class mail volume since 2006 and has been struggling with ways to offset corresponding revenue losses in recent years.
Today's announcement comes on the heels of word Wednesday that the Postal Service will close its Roanoke mail-processing facility, which employs about 500 people, and have letters and packages sent instead to Greensboro, N.C.
The Roanoke mail facility has been in jeopardy since last year, when the Postal Service said it was considering closing 250 processing centers, including Roanoke's. Officials cited significant decreases in mail volume and the costs of a massive infrastructure.
