Richmond International Airport's passenger traffic was down 4 percent in 2011, compared with the year before, according to the Capital Region Airport Commission.
Last year, 3,179,956 air travelers used RIC, the commission reported this morning, while 3,311,747 moved through the airport in 2010.
December's traffic was 2.5 percent lower than the same month a year ago, with 249,617 passengers using the field in 2011 versus 255,932 in 2010.
Total cargo activity for the year increased 9.6 percent: 93.21 million pounds in 2011 versus 85.04 million pounds in 2010, the commission said. The growth was the first in annual cargo volume since 2007.
The decline in passenger traffic reflects the sluggish economy as well as contractions in airline capacity.
