Greyhound Express launches Richmond service to NYC

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Greyhound has started an upscale bus service from Richmond to New York.

Greyhound Express buses run between Richmond and Newark, N.J., and New York City, with at least three direct round trips daily. Richmond service began Tuesday.

"Consumer demand continues to grow on this popular service, and we are expanding Greyhound Express as fast as possible to meet this demand," Dave Leach, Greyhound's president and CEO, said in a statement.

Nonrefundable one-way tickets online begin at $1 and go as high as $45, according to company website www.mygreyhoundexpress.com, where tickets are on sale.

Ticket prices increase as demand for a particular schedule rises, according to Greyhound spokesman Timothy Stokes.

The service competes with Megabus.com's discount East Coast express service, which began serving Richmond in December.

Megabus passengers to Northeast destinations, including New York, have to change buses in Washington, while the Greyhound Express from Richmond is direct to New York City; some of the buses stop in Newark.

Like Megabus, Greyhound Express will provide customers guaranteed seats on new buses featuring free Wi-Fi, leather seats, extra legroom and power outlets.

Greyhound Express operates from dedicated gates and has a private waiting area for customers in its bus terminal, which is on the Boulevard near the Diamond.

Customers can buy discounted Express tickets online, print the tickets or pick them up at a self-service ticketing kiosk.

Greyhound Express started operations in December and now also serves Washington; Philadelphia; Baltimore; Silver Spring, Md.; Boston; Pittsburgh; Chicago; Milwaukee; Madison, Wis.; Minneapolis; Indianapolis; Lafayette, Ind.; Cincinnati; Champaign, Ill.; and St. Louis.

Greyhound Lines Inc. is the largest North American provider of intercity bus transportation, serving more than 3,800 destinations across the continent.

Fast-growing Megabus, an intercity bus service operator, runs seven buses daily from Richmond to Washington, as well as three buses to Charlotte, N.C., and two to Hampton.

Its arrival and departure location is the plaza opposite Richmond's Main Street Station on East Main Street downtown.
