Snagajob snags top place to work award

Online job search company and software developer Snagajob has been named the best small company in the U.S. to work for by a Chicago-based institute that advocates improved workplace environments.

The Great Place to Work Institute selected Henrico County-based Snagajob from among hundreds of U.S. companies that applied. Snagajob had been ranked among the top 10 best companies since 2008 in the category for firms with 50 to 250 employees.

"It is a huge milestone for the company," said Shawn Boyer, Snagajob's co-founder and chief executive officer.

The full list of companies in the 2011 rankings is expected to be released today.

The Great Place to Work Institute ranks companies based largely on an employee survey. The survey includes questions focusing on how much employees trust their employer, whether they feel a sense of pride in their work, and how much they enjoy working with their colleagues.

In addition to having numerous office events such as an annual chili cook-off and an office Olympics, Snagajob offers employees perks and benefits that include tuition reimbursement, quarterly bonuses, an annual paid day off to do volunteer work, paternity leave, back-up child care, gym membership reimbursements, and all-expense-paid trips to resorts for five- and 10-year work anniversaries. The company also provides a $100 gift card for new hires.

Boyer said those perks are not just about public relations or having fun.

"If you do it right, I am convinced it drives a better bottom-line performance," he said.

Since applying for the award, Snagajob has increased its employment. The company, founded in 2000, has been on hiring blitz this year, increasing its staff from about 150 to about 340. It plans to fill 30 more jobs by the end of the year.
