With this week’s inclement weather and winter fully upon us, we at Richmond Drives got to thinking about good vehicles to have in the snow. Subaru sprung to mind, because I know several people who have purchased Outbacks within the last year and have raved about them.
The 2011 Outback is a true champ in the snow, with its all-wheel drive and generous ground clearance. To find out more, I spoke with Karen Jarrelle, a product specialist at Subaru of Richmond, who filled me in with more details.
DESIGNED FOR PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY
“The Outback is built to do anything, whether you’re looking to hike in Alaska or ski in the Rockies,” she said. “They’re not going to hydroplane in the rain, and they’re not going to slide in the snow.” And last year the Outback was newly redesigned for more legroom and better styling.
“I love Subarus,” Jarelle continued, “and I believe in them, and so do our customers. Nine times out of 10, if you buy one Subaru, you’ll be back for another one. And if you go onto Kelley Blue Book or Edmunds.com, Subarus have some of the highest resale value in the country.”
The Outback is a tough, durable vehicle, designed for performance and safety. One feature of note is the Boxer engine, which is used in Porsches.
Jarrelle went on to note that for the fourth year running the Outback has been named a top safety pick by the IIHS, an independent research group for crash tests and highway safety. “We’re the only manufacturer that can honestly say we’ve earned a top safety pick for every model, which includes the Outback,” she said.
THE SYMMETRICAL ALL-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM IS UNIQUE
Unlike most all-wheel-drive vehicles, the Outback has a symmetrical AWD design, which means the vehicle stays in AWD at all speeds, at all times.
As Jarrelle explained, “Let’s say you’re driving down Broad Street and there’s a 45 mph speed limit. In most all-wheel-drive vehicles, if you’re going on a straight road and hit about 50, the computer is going to tell the engine that you’re not in any danger and will kick it out of all-wheel drive. They’ll only turn the all-wheel drive back on if you start to swerve. Subaru’s system, being symmetrical, won’t kick it out, even if you’re driving at 90 mph, which is unique.”
In addition to the AWD system, Jarrelle noted the Outback has a continuously variable transmission for a smooth ride. “If you want an SUV that rides like a car, the Outback is for you,” she said.
