Anti-Art School coming to Richmond

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Dr. Sketchy's is what happens "when cabaret meets art school," its Web site says.

As improbable as it seems, Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School - a modest little Brooklyn burlesque drawing club that has become an international phenomenon - has opened a branch in Richmond.

The capital region joins Tokyo, Rome, London, Paris and Melbourne, among other cities, on the list of Dr. Sketchy's locations.

Dr. Sketchy's was founded in 2005 by Molly Crabapple, a former art-studio model who disliked the sterile environment of traditional drawing classes.

Crabapple, a freelance illustrator-burlesque dancer-entrepreneur, set up Dr. Sketchy's as a drawing session where the models are costumed performers - burlesque dancers, circus freaks, puppeteers, whatever.

The guest artists are invited to drink, draw and participate in silly contests (best left-handed sketch or model's favorite image, for example).

A New York City burlesque producer and Richmond native known as "Miss RunAround Sue" has come south to play headmistress of the Richmond branch. She's scouring the streets for engaging models.

On Jan. 14, Gallery5 will open from 6 to 9 p.m. for the first Dr. Sketchy's in River City. For $7, artists can tease their imagination, belly up to the bar and sketch away.

For more information, visit http://drsketchy.com/ or e-mail drsketchysrva@gmail.com.

Gallery5 is at 200 W. Marshall St., Richmond.
