The Richmond Peace Education Center is hosting the Richmond premiere of the movie "World Peace and Other 4th Grade Achievements." It will show Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Byrd Theatre in Carytown.
The work, from Charlottesville filmmaker Chris Farina, tells the story of teacher John Hunter.
It's part narrative about Hunter, a Richmond native who began his education in the city's segregated school system and wound up teaching here before continuing his career in Charlottesville.
It's part history of the "World Peace Game," something Hunter created to teach his students how they fit into the world.
"I was introduced to John and his work by a mutual acquaintance, and within five minutes, I could see a film," Farina said. "He's a great teacher, and his students are so engaged. They respond in such a strong, positive way. I thought immediately that if I could just capture the beauty in that relationship between a master teacher and his wonderful students, that could be something worth making.
"As I became more familiar with John and his World Peace Game, . . . I was more and more impassioned by the lessons of this exercise, this teaching children the work of peace, with the emphasis on the word 'work.'"
In the game, students take on the role of leader of a fictional country, and they have to work themselves -- and their nations -- out of a series of circumstances that, if approached wrong, could lead to war.
The cost of the screening is $5. Afterward, Farina and Hunter will answer questions.
Then from 4 to 6 p.m., the RPEC will hold a reception with a meet-and-greet session with the people in the film. The cost of the reception is $20, and reservations are required.
