Two Virginia Commonwealth University film students will screen a documentary this weekend that they filmed last summer on how Virginians coped with the economic downturn.
Seniors Ben Saunders of Mechanicsville and Joey Schihl of Richmond spent two months traveling to all corners of the commonwealth — living out of a Volkswagen van — to gather stories about the hardships people experienced.
The 40-minute documentary, "Blank Street," will be screened at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Byrd Theater, 2908 W. Cary St. in Carytown; the screening is free to the public. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.
The documentary captures the lives of displaced workers, homeless veterans and struggling single parents.
But there are also stories of hope — people, communities and organizations rallying to help those in need.
A question-and-answer session will follow the screening.
The documentary was sponsored by the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy and the Consumer Alliance of Virginia.
