Wine: Wildekrans Pinotage 2007

Winery: Wildekrans Wine Estate, Walker Bay, South Africa

Composition: 100 percent Pinotage

Description: This smooth-drinking red with soft tannins has layers of berries, primarily red cherry. Aged in French and American oak. 14.5 percent alcohol.

Cost: $16-$18

Where to buy: South African Wine and Food Festival at Grayhaven Winery this weekend. Can be ordered at local wine shops.

Fast fact: Pinotage is a cross between Pinot Noir in Cinsault grapes and was developed in South Africa. It is rarely grown in Virginia, but at Grayhaven Winery it's a specialty of assistant winemaker and South African native Deon Abrams. In addition to its own wines and the Wildekrans Pinotage, Grayhaven's festival will feature numerous South African wines, including a VIP tasting of Mulderbosch Faithful Hound, a tasty Bordeaux blend (43 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 32 percent Merlot, 12 percent Petit Verdot, 7 percent Malbec, 6 percent Cabernet Franc) with great plum and cherry flavors ($27-$30) as well as a crisp Firefinch Sauvignon Blanc ($13-$16).

Upcoming wine event: South African Wine and Food Festival, Grayhaven Winery, Gum Spring; Friday 4-6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m.-6 p.m.; single-day tasters $15, single-day general admission (no tasting) $10, youth (13-20) $7, under 12 free; information: (804) 556-3917 or http://www.southafricanfoodfest.com/
