Thomas Dale High School's theater department will present Jon Jory's 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen's classic "Pride & Prejudice" April 23-25 at Thomas Dale High School, 3626 W. Hundred Road in Chester. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m.
Students at Thomas Dale High School (home of Chesterfield County's Specialty Center for the Arts) have been engaged in a "Jane Austen Awareness" project that aims to educate students into the lofty vocabulary of Austen. Student choreographer Mariah West is taking the period dances to the school's physical education department, and bowing and curtsying are coming back into vogue.
Local professional actress Melissa Johnston Price will join the cast as Mrs. Bennet. The play marks director Keri Wormald's first show at the Specialty Center. She is known locally for her work at the Barksdale Theatre on such productions as "Doubt" and the upcoming "Well." Former Richmond actor and director Daniel Ruth designed the set and frequent Richmond lighting designer Joe Doran served as consultant on the lighting design.
Student cast members include Courtney McCotter and Sebastian Deleon as the sparring lovers Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. The Bennet sisters include Anna Nicholson, Meg Price, Stephanie Hopkins and Victoria Frye. Anthony Pullo will portray Mr. Bennet with Jessie Dzura and Melissa Johnston Price as Mrs. Bennet. Jordan Goldston and Savannah Hatcher will portray the Bingleys and long-time Chesterfield theater teacher Carol Halbert will appear as Lady Catherine DeBourgh.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased at the door 30 minutes prior to the show. For further information, call Keri Wormald at (804) 768-6245, ext. 502 or see www.SpecialtyCenterArts.com.
