White House historian William Seale will give a lecture next week at the University of Richmond on the White Houses and presidents during the Civil War.
Seale, who is the author of "The President's House: A History," will discuss on Thursday Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis and the White Houses in which they lived. The focus of the talk is social and cultural history of the two presidents, not just the Civil War.
Seale, who specializes in the history and restoration of American state capitol buildings, received his master's and doctorate from Duke University. He is the author of books on the restoration of several state capitols, including those in Michigan, Ohio, Kansas, Florida, Mississippi and Alabama.
Scheduled for Thursday at the University of Richmond's Tyler Haynes Commons in the Alice Haynes Room from 7:30 to 9 p.m., the lecture is free, but reservations are required.
This Museum of the Confederacy Bottimore Lecture is co-sponsored by the UR Department of History, Preservation Virginia, Historic Richmond Foundation and the Virginia Center for Architecture.
