Who would have thought this homey morsel, which first popped out of our ancestors’ ovens in fire-proof pottery cups—hence their name—would have re-invented itself as a glamorous dessert worthy of devoted followings?
Certainly bakers and cake designers in Richmond understand the attraction. Some re-interpret old favorites, such as Frostings’ “Wendy’s Red Velvet Cupcake,” a saucy little treat named for owner Matt Fraker’s mother, and the “Just Good” chocolate soufflé cupcake with marshmallow whip filling from Pearl’s Cupcake Shoppe, a delicious spin down memory lane.
Innately charming and whimsical, the cupcake elevates any occasion. Picture the enchanting cupcakes from By the Bull’s Eye and Carytown Cupcakes at a bridal shower. Or tender, moist “Pretty in Pink” frosted cupcakes from Summer Williams at Williams Bakery. The flavor-explosion raspberry champagne cupcake from Laura Reynolds’ The Buttercream Bee is a knock-out for a “You Got Engaged!” celebration.
And let’s not forget how a cupcake can comfort at the end of a long week. Who wouldn’t want to snuggle up with a cup of coffee and two or three “Nana Banana Cupcakes” from Robin Buskey at Baby Cakes?
As for showing up with the perfect gift, you’ll always be invited back thanks to intense “Passion Fruit Cream” cupcakes from Jenny West’s Sweetest Thing Bakery.
For those of us who love everything about cupcakes except their size, cake designer Kendra Thomas comes to the rescue with her beyond delicious “Cupcake Cake,” a super-sized confection as endearing as the cupcake itself—only with lots of second servings!
We are so thankful to the talented designers who provided these luscious desserts—and remember this is but a small sampling of the varieties and flavors available at their shops and bakeries.
