Oh, we know your type.
You’ve found the man and are sporting the ring. You’ve inevitably started acquiring wedding magazines, guides, and bookmarked many a wedding planning website to your list of favorites. No doubt that each of these offers some semblance of a timeline that must be followed in order for a stress-free wedding day to prevail at the end of all the planning chaos, fun, and bewilderment.
Well, with more than 16 years of experience and more than 700 weddings under our belts, we are here to set you free from the perceived obligation of following any timeline to a ‘T.’
The problem? No two brides are alike. Some of us care for Maggie Sotterro dresses while others prefer Romona Keveza. Some dream of a tower of pink cupcakes while others pine for an armadillo groom’s cake on a blush and bashful overlay.
If everything else about your Big Day is unique, why let anything else dictate your every move?
Also, those handy dandy timelines may suggest that you book certain vendors say, six to nine months out, but let’s face it—the talented go fast!
So do us a favor and follow these three Wedology 101-endorsed steps:
Step 1: Crumble the aforementioned list
Step 2: Toss out as if it were Pantone 14-0848 (Recycle please!)
Step 3: Eat wedding cake samples to take off the edge
Then, list what you value most, and take a good hard look at your finances. Setting a date, logistically, needs to take precedence, so go ahead and book what you need to in order to make that happen. (i.e. reception and ceremony locations)
Then, pick what’s most important to you and book it. Have to have a three-tiered confectionary concoction from your favorite baker but you haven’t booked anyone else? Go ahead and give your “must have” a call and start finding ways to burn off those cake sample calories.
The caveat to this line of thinking? Marching to your own tune can come with a cost. Procrastination is expensive and sticker shock walks hand in hand with waiting until the last minute to book anything.
And remember: there are more brides than professionals, so think about that when considering the categories that can only handle one event per day, such as photographers, videographers, planners and some reception sites.
Ultimately, it is our experience that you, not your timeline, should dictate what means the most to you on your Big Day.
One last piece of advice—make the decision and move on. Don’t over analyze and don’t second-guess yourself. Your sanity will thank you later.
