When Emme Corbet, 10, and her sister Carolyn, 12, were in kindergarten and first grade, their family took a trip to Ireland. Their mother, Kathy Corbet, helped each child keep a journal as a way of making the vacation more meaningful.
Travel journals have since become a tradition for the Richmond family.
They start their journals before they leave home, with research into the history, geography, culture and attractions of the places they'll visit. While there, the girls write every day and tape in brochures, menus, coins and other memorabilia. They often write in restaurants while waiting for dinner.
Not only are the girls' memories of the trips reinforced, but they also have a better understanding of their experiences after putting them into words, their mother said.
Carolyn is an accomplished sailor who also keeps a sailing journal to help her remember the weather, currents and other details of courses she has sailed. "As you can see, it's wet!" she said, fanning the warped pages of her notebook.
