Daylily Displays: Area display gardens are open to view during the daylily season:

Talley's Daylily Farm, open 8 a.m.-8 p.m. today and Mondays-Wednesdays and 4-8 p.m. Thursdays-Fridays (closed Sundays) through July 12 at 9542 Morefield Meadows Drive, Amelia, (804) 561-5086.

Perennial Pickle, with gardens and fields open 9 a.m.-2 p.m. today and Thursdays-Saturdays through July 9 at the garden, 14145 Burruss Lane, Ruther Glen in Caroline County, (804) 994-4408.

Friendship Gardens, open 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. daily through July 10 at the daylily and iris display garden, 10424 Genito Lane, Chesterfield. Appointment requested. (804) 744-1218.

Tomato Tasting: Bring your homegrown tomato 10-11:30 a.m. today to enter contests in largest (by weight), ugliest and best-tasting tomatoes; and vote for a favorite cultivar by sampling tomato varieties, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Strange's Garden Center, 12111 W. Broad St. Free. (804) 360-2800.

Flowers After 5: Extended hours, wine tastings ($10 additional fee for three wine samples), music and summertime blooms, 5-9 p.m. Thursday at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Ave. $6-$10; free admission to garden members. (804) 262-9887. Continues Thursdays through Aug. 18.

"Flights of Fancy," dynamic exhibition exploring staircases as architectural and artistic elements, opens with a reception 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Virginia Center for Architecture, 2501 Monument Ave. Free; reservation requested. 644-3041, ext. 100. Exhibit continues through Sept. 11.

Saturdays in the Garden: Monticello's garden programs take place at 9:30 a.m. (except as noted) spring through fall at various locations on the estate, Albemarle County:

•July 9: Natural History of Trees Walk, Garden Center at Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center.

•July 16: Natural Dyes Workshop, Tufton Farm.

•July 30: Winemaking Workshop, Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center.

Lewis Ginter programs: Programs to increase your gardening know-how take place at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Ave.

•July 12-Aug. 2: Basic Floral Design, Part 1, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, $160-$170; materials provided, bring floral design.

•July 13: Walk and Talk – Butterflies in the Garden, 10:30 a.m.-noon, $14; free to members. Repeats Aug. 17 and Sept. 14.

•July 14: Use What You Have – Vegetables, produce-as-decoration workshop, 6-8 p.m., $40-$50; materials provided, bring a container.

July 16: Walk and Talk – Hydrangeas, 9-10:30 a.m., $14; free to members.

•July 23, 30, 31; Aug. 6, 7, 13: Basic Home Landscape Design, hours vary, $210-$250.
