Q: I am newly engaged and need some direction. My married friend told me the main thing I need to do now is find a reception venue. Is that correct? Also, I wanted to know: how do you pick a great wedding planner? —Jessica
A: Congrats! Securing the reception venue is a popular option since that’s often where the most money is spent and often requires the most planning. However, this all depends on what is most important to you. If you value having a large ceremony in a cathedral or temple and a small affair for a few friends, then obviously that would change your approach and the order of importance of what you need to reserve.
To find a good planner, seek someone who is trust- worthy, dependable and confident in his or her ability to produce what your vision is for your wedding. When interviewing planners, trust your gut — is this someone you feel you can openly ask questions, and who can fill in the blanks when you don’t know what to ask? There are a number of great planners in the area. A valuable thing to consider is planners who have space to bring vendors all together versus driving all around town to meet them. Also, review their portfolios and see if the events they have created are similar to the type of event and budget you are looking for.
TAYA’S TIP: SENTIMENTAL MEMENTO
“Our son had a fairy tale wedding with the Disney Princess theme. At the rehearsal dinner, my daughter-in-law gave me an embroidered keepsake handkerchief with this inscription: ‘Thank You for Your Love and the Man of My Dreams — July 7, 2001.’ How about that for warming a mother-in-law’s heart?” – Rita B.
The groom could do something similar for his future in-laws with an engraved message on a pewter cup, picture frame or tray. Virginia PewterSmith will customize designs with your choice of “ornaments” Virginia themes, career and pets.
