What Tree is That?

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Identifying trees can be as simple as digging your phone out of your pocket.

The Arbor Day Foundation has developed an application to make identifying trees even easy for iPhone and iPod Touch users.

The Arbor Day Tree Identification Guide: What Tree Is That? App helps people identify a species of trees in just minutes. By identifying a few basic characteristics of a tree, such as leaf size and shape and branch structure, iPhone users will be able to determine what type of tree is in their backyard, neighborhood, city park or woods.

The app can be used anywhere regardless of cell-phone coverage once it's downloaded.

Included are advanced botanical illustrations of the many distinctive characteristics of more than 250 tree species found in North America. The illustrations are precisely detailed in their depiction of colors, shapes and textures, making it easy to identify trees.

Once a tree has been identified, the user can tag the tree at its exact location using the iPhone's global positioning system.

Cost for the app is $4.95 on iPhones or at iTunes.
