As mothers see their children head to school — some for the first time — they have the opportunity to come together in prayer.
First Day prayer services will be held this morning at various churches in the Richmond region. It provides women an opportunity to pray in their community for children, their schools and places of employment.
"God is good to encourage hearts and that's what this gathering is all about," said Betsy Akins of Chesterfield County, who founded the First Day movement in 2006.
This year, prayer events spread to Lynchburg, Culpeper, Williamsburg and Northern Virginia.
First Day services in the Richmond area will be held at Bon Air Baptist Church, 2531 Buford Road; Colonial Heights Baptist Church, 17201 Jefferson Davis Highway; and KingsWay Community Church, 14111 Sovereign Grace Drive.
Doors open at 10 a.m. for a time of inspirational music and meditation. Prayer events run from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
