Colorful denim can be casual chic

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The latest sneak peek at spring trends reveals that colorful denim is here to stay. But is it really a worthy trend in which to invest your dollars?

Well, as there are two sides to every story and then the truth, the same goes for the colorful denim trend. On one side, you have the argument that they're a great way to add color and style to your lower half, and on the other side is the argument that bright royal-blue denim has limited wearability.

But the truth is that this trend is stylish and impractical at the same time. It takes a strong strategy of color choice and cut to find the perfect way to use this vibrant denim. So let's delve into how the color choice and fit can determine how far these pants will take your wardrobe.

If you're like most women, you don't want your denim to be limited in usability. It's all about making the best choices that will allow the piece to be dressed up or down. Same principle applies to colorful denim.

Can you really dress up neon-pink jeans for work and then dress them down for personal events? Honestly, no. If you're in any type of work environment where the words "appropriate" are used, I don't care how conservative that white-and-black striped collared shirt you paired with them appears to be, it's just not professional.

But, if you choose a darker tone such as Riviera blue, which comes off as a darker teal, then you can pair these with a tailored black blazer, that black-and-white striped collared shirt, and head to the office.

The key is to choose calmer colors if you want to be able to wear them in and out of work. That said, it's certainly a worthy style investment to purchase at least one pair of bright jeans if you're looking for a way to instantly liven up your wardrobe and start a new trend for yourself in 2012.

Although the brighter hues will mainly be for personal outings, that's typically where you really want to spread your wings anyway. The closer we get to spring, the more beautiful the color choices get, with bright neon hues at the forefront. Look to J.Crew's toothpick jeans in light citron or blue grotto as great color examples.

Paired with making the right color choice is finding the right fit. No matter how beautiful that bright red denim is, the fit can ruin everything. No matter your shape, the safest bet you'll make is going with high waist. You immediately eliminate the risk of midsection and backside spillage.

Check out J Brand denim for great high-waist options. As for the leg cut, most of the brighter denim is made in a skinny jean. If you're looking to create proportions between your top half and lower half, skinny will not be the way to go. You should look for a more liberal cut.

Rag & Bone is one of the few designers offering brighter denim in a cut other than skinny.

A note about pairings: If you have taken the bold style step and purchased a bright pair of denim jeans, don't feel obligated to pair them with black or white. This is the time to really step out in color. If you choose bright-orange denim jeans, choose a cobalt-blue tee and neutral jacket such as khaki or black to pair with them.

If you choose plum purple pants, a white-and-yellow print blouse would be beyond beautiful.

While black and white are always the safest choice, the next gradual style step is to explore out-of-the-box ways to pair your color choices.
