Two people charged with aiding and assisting the individuals accused in the shooting death of a Powhatan County high school student were granted bond yesterday.

Bond for Bennett B. Davis, 19, was set at $30,000 secured; bond for David T. Franklin, 22, was set at $35,000.

Preliminary hearings for the two are scheduled for Oct. 24.

A third defendant, Brad L. Harris, 34, remains free on $50,000 bond.

The three are charged with six counts each of accessory after the fact in the June 24 shooting death of Tahliek Taliaferro. Taliaferro was shot in the back of the head with an assault rifle. Another youth, Courtney Jones, was injured in the shooting.

Davis also is charged with one count of obstructing justice and one count of possession of marijuana. Harris also is charged with one count of destroying, altering or concealing evidence and one count of obstructing justice; and Franklin also is charged with one count of obstructing justice.

Two other defendants facing charges, Randall C. Powers and his wife, Brenda F. Powers, are scheduled to appear in Amelia County General District Court on Tuesday. The couple face six counts each of being an accessory after the fact, as well as one count each of destroying, altering or concealing evidence.

An investigator with the Powhatan Sheriff's Office has said the five are friends of Stephanie Reynolds and cousins Joseph "Joey" Parrish and Ethan Parrish and aided them as they attempted to avoid arrest in the days after the slaying of 18-year-old Taliaferro.

The Parrish cousins and Reynolds initially were charged with first-degree murder, aggravated malicious wounding and two counts of using a firearm in Taliaferro's death. Since then, the Parrish cousins also have been charged with attempted murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a murder.

Powhatan investigators recently revealed that an escape attempt in July by Joey Parrish had been thwarted. Parrish had persuaded a nurse at James River Juvenile Regional Detention Center to give him a handcuff key after telling the woman he knew pagan gang members who could pressure her to help him, an investigator said.

The nurse, Karen N. Peregoy, 38, of Goochland County, has since been fired and faces a misdemeanor charge of aiding and attempting the escape of a prisoner.
