Officials have decided not to move Benedictine High School to Goochland County after all.
This means the military-styled Catholic school will remain at 304 N. Sheppard St. in Richmond instead of being moved to the Goochland site of the religious order's monastery and the school's athletic fields.
"The committee studied the situation, got a lot of input, and the decision of the committee is that we would be here for the next 100 years -- God willing," said Headmaster John McGinty.
The recommendation, affirmed by the monastic order that runs the school, came from a committee the school formed in March 2007 to look at long-term needs.
The 18-member Vision 2012 Committee suggested as primary concerns strengthening the school's academic and military programs. The school enrolls 259 cadets.
Benedictine opened at its current location in 1911. The abbey for the Benedictine Society of Virginia, the monastery in charge of the school, subsequently moved to 12829 River Road on Goochland's east end.
In 2001, the school began moving its athletic fields to the site, until all sports except basketball took place in Goochland.
Rumors had begun to swirl early last year that the academic campus might follow.
However the committee, consisting of members of parents and school alumni along with educators and professionals from throughout the Richmond area, decided that students' interests were best served at its location in the city.
