Twelve people were arrested last night during a sobriety checkpoint by VCU police officers.

Five motorists were arrested for drunk driving; six were arrested for underage possession of alcohol; and one was arrested for obstruction of justice, said Officer Edgar Greer.

A total of 493 cars were stopped during the checkpoint that operated between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. in the 700 block of West Main Street, police said.

The police also issued 51 summons for a variety of charges, including expired registration tags, expired or rejected inspections, possession of marijuana, driving without lights and illegal window tinting. --Linda Dunham
