Authorities raided several booths at a Chesterfield County flea market yesterday and seized items they believe to be counterfeit.
The action followed an investigation into "copyright and trademark infringement violations," authorities said in a news release.
Shortly before noon, officers and detectives from the Virginia State Police, Henrico County and Chesterfield police departments, and the Hanover County Sheriff's Office took items from five booths at the Jeff Davis Highway Flea Market at 5700 Jefferson Davis Highway.
Hundreds of items, including DVDs, CDs, clothing, shoes and accessories, were removed from the premises, Chesterfield police Capt. Steve Neal said.
No one was arrested as a direct result of the search warrants, Neal said.
The police did not identify the vendors targeted or say whether this flea-market raid was related to other flea-market raids that have occurred in the past year.
Brittany Wolfrey and three friends from Dinwiddie County arrived at the flea market at 1 p.m. and was told by police officers guarding the entrance that the market was closed but probably would reopen later in the afternoon, Wolfrey said.
It still was closed when they returned about 4 p.m., she said.
Wolfrey said she wasn't surprised there might be counterfeit goods being offered for sale by some vendors.
The week before, she and her friends bought three pairs of shoes at the flea market for $70 a pair. She saw similar shoes being sold for more than $300 a pair at a local mall, she said.
