SLIDESHOW: Spiders return to Richmond
The Richmond Spiders got a warm welcome this afternoon from about 400 fans who turned out to greet the national football champions at the Robins Center on campus.
Coach Mike London stepped off the bus to cheers and held the Football Championship Subdivision title trophy over his head.
"We brought the championship home for you," London said.
Some in the crowd waved signs and copies of this morning's Richmond Times-Dispatch with the banner headline, "National Champs."
With school out for the semester, many in the crowd were older fans and alumni.
The 24-7 victory over Montana last night was the first NCAA title for UR and comes in London's first year as head coach.
The Spiders flew in earlier this afternoon from Chattanooga, Tenn., site of the title game, and headed for campus.
"We played for each other. We've been in this thing for a long time. We all did it together," said defensive end Lawrence Sidbury, one of the stars of the championship game.
