A Richmond economic development official has been charged with cocaine possession.
C. Cary Brown, 45, of the 600 block of West Franklin St., was arrested Nov. 13 after a Nov. 4 traffic stop at Leigh and Lombardy streets by Virginia Commonwealth University police.
In records filed in Richmond Circuit Court, a VCU police officer said a search of the vehicle revealed a pack of cigarettes under the driver's seat. Inside the pack were six individually packaged white rock substances that were later confirmed as 0.755 gram of cocaine, according to court records.
According to the officer, Brown acknowledged a drug problem and said he paid $60 for the substances. Brown said he had been buying drugs in the Newtowne area for a year, spending $400 per month, according to court records.
Brown is listed in the city's employee directory as a programs administrator in the Department of Economic Development.
In February 2007, Mayor L. Douglas Wilder named Brown interim director of economic development, before the appointment of Carthan F. Currin III as director that July. Brown has worked for the city since 1996.
Brown and attorney Angela Whitley did not return calls yesterday. City spokesman Michael Wallace declined to comment, citing personnel matters. Brown is scheduled for a Jan. 20 court hearing.
