Federal immigration authorities arrested 46 street gang members and associates during a three-day operation last week in the Richmond area.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents assisted by Virginia State Police and local authorities, made the arrests between Wednesday and Friday, according to ICE.
Of those arrested, 20 were known gang members and 21 were identified gang associates affiliated with the MS-13, Sur-13, Latin Kings, and Vatos Locos street gangs. They were from El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico, authorities said.
Operation Community Shield is a national law-enforcement initiative that targets members of violent gangs who are not in the country legally. More than 8,000 gang members have been arrested since ICE began Operation Community Shield in 2005.
