When winter arrives, people like Dave Taylor will be ready to help those whose homes need a little preparation for the cold.
Taylor, vice president of Hanover County-based Resource International Ltd., and his employees are among the many volunteers who participate in the county's winterization projects.
Taylor and his company have been helping out for 15 years by spending a weekend applying plastic and weather-stripping around windows and doors, insulating water pipes and doing other home repairs for low-income, disabled and elderly residents.
"We get a lot of personal satisfaction out of doing this for the various families," said Taylor, who added that he has established relationships with families and often goes back year after year to the same homes.
Lisa Adkins, program coordinator with Hanover's Department of Community Resources, said the county is once again looking for volunteers to help with this year's projects. All materials are provided.
Over the past two decades, volunteers have helped about 70 families each year, Adkins said.
The deadline for anyone who wishes to refer a family for assistance is Sept. 30. Adkins said she will accept referrals for assistance through December, though the assistance efforts will depend on volunteer capacity.
Jason Stanley is the youth minister at Lebanon United Methodist Church in Hanover. About 60 congregation members helped last year, and Stanley expects the same this fall.
Younger members get the benefit of working with and for older generations, and many work side by side with their parents and siblings.
"It's just a great experience for those who can do it as a family," Stanley said.
