The chief deputy to the Richmond commonwealth's attorney has resigned to return to private practice, he said yesterday.
Matthew P. Geary, 38, will be leaving the office effective later this month.
"I had a great opportunity arise to go back to private practice and decided it was an opportunity to take," Geary said yesterday.
Commonwealth's Attorney Michael N. Herring brought Geary in as his chief deputy when he took office Jan. 1, 2006.
Their first day on the job, six people were killed in the city of Richmond, including four members of the Harvey family.
Herring, Geary and Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Learned Barry prosecuted Ricky Javon Gray and his nephew Ray Dandridge in the case. Gray was sentenced to death. Dandridge pleaded guilty to capital murder and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Geary prosecuted at least 10 homicide cases in his time in the office, along with robberies, shootings and other crimes.
"He's been a goodwill ambassador for the commonwealth's attorney's office throughout the metropolitan area," Barry said.
Geary said he will miss the job and enjoyed working with everyone in the office. -- Reed Williams
