Dethroned Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Jeffrey M. Frederick is still undecided over whether he will run again for the chairmanship at the state party convention in late May.
"Amy and I have some decisions to make,” Frederick said in a letter e-mailed to supporters today, referring to himself and his wife. “Over the next several days, we will be talking amongst ourselves and with close friends, and praying about our next steps. We will fill you in as soon as we make those decisions."
The Prince William County delegate was ousted by party leaders Saturday by a vote of 57-18. He had been elected less than a year ago at the full convention, supported by thousands of social and fiscal grass-roots conservatives who backed him over incumbent chairman and former Lt. Gov. John Hager.
Late last week, the embattled Frederick hinted that he would run again for the post if dismissed by the party’s central committee. He has previously said he would not seek reelection to his seat in the House of Delegates, a seat for which Amy Frederick may run.
“I am disappointed for our party and our grassroots, since the very people who have presided over our party’s decline in Virginia are now back in charge,” Frederick states in his letter.
Party leaders and even some supporters have urged Frederick not to run, citing the need to build party unity behind GOP candidates for statewide office heading into the fall elections.
Republicans are trying to hold onto a slim majority in the House of Delegates, all 100 seats of which are up for election this fall. Virginians will also choose a governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general this year.
