Man receives 27.5 years in sister's death

SPOTSYLVANIA -- An 18-year-old Virginia man has been sentenced 27½ years in prison for the 2007 killing of his sister, her attempted rape and a sledgehammer attack on his niece.


Walter Leon Smith Jr. was sentenced yesterday by Spotsylvania Circuit Judge David H. Beck.


In a plea agreement, he was convicted in January of second-degree murder in the death of Betsy Mary Smith and other charges.


Smith was originally charged with first-degree murder.


The 2-year-old niece has recovered from the attack.
