A funeral home director-turned-flight attendant was given a $100,000 bond yesterday and placed on terms that likely will keep him grounded in Virginia.
Kiplin L. Jordan, 44, will have to surrender his passport and remain in Virginia if he makes the bond imposed by Henrico County Circuit Judge Burnett Miller III.
Jordan faces decades behind bars if convicted of 19 felony charges of embezzling money from various accounts, including pre-need burial plans.
Jordan operated K.L. Jordan Funeral and Cremation Services in Henrico and K.L. Jordan Casket and Urn Gallery in Richmond until he was shut down by state regulators in late 2007. He now faces criminal charges in connection with financial dealings in Henrico.
Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Michael Feinmel said that about $60,000 is missing and scoffed at defense suggestions yesterday that Jordan needs to continue his job as a flight attendant to make reimbursement.
Feinmel said Jordan has yet to make restitution in more than a dozen civil cases and that it's unlikely he will be able to do so in the criminal matters.
But defense lawyer Jeffrey L. Everhart said that Jordan, who is originally from Clarksville, has long ties to the Richmond area, numerous supporters, and is raising alone a 17-year-old daughter. He will also surrender his passport.
Everhart said if Jordan had intended to flee, it would have happened weeks ago when Henrico investigators told him he was being charged.
Jordan complied, Everhart said. "The proof is in the pudding. . . . He's no dummy."
