Virginia is getting nearly $1 million in stimulus funds from the Department of Agriculture to improve rural watersheds in Southwest Virginia.
The Virginia funding includes $225,300 for work on Little Reed Island Creek in Pulaski County, $367,700 for Chestnut Creek in Carroll County and $380,000 for work on the North Fork of the Powell River in Lee County.
Nationwide, the USDA says it will send $84.8 million to state and local governments to improve water quality, increase water supply, decrease soil erosion, and improve fish and wildlife habitat in rural communities.
"President Obama is committed to improving water quality, creating more dependable water supplies and decreasing soil erosion and this funding will make a big difference in the lives of the people who live in these rural communities," said Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.
