Chinese-affiliated organizations across central Virginia are pooling resources and asking for financial help to bring the family of a slain Henrico County deliveryman to Richmond.
"They are determined to claim his remains and return to China," said John Kang of the Central Virginia Chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans.
The organization and several area churches are working to obtain visas for the family.
Contributions can be made at any Wachovia Bank branch to this nonprofit, 501(c)(3) group: Organization of Chinese Americans, Yong Sun Memorial Fund. All proceeds are to go toward travel expenses for the family.
"They want to see their loved one one more time and to take home any possessions to remember him by, even something so small as a towel," said Sarah Bice, who is assisting in the effort.
Yong Sun, 36, was gunned down in the 500 block of Lowell Street in eastern Henrico County on Easter Sunday night as he sat in his car. He had just delivered a restaurant order.
Henrico police yesterday said no arrest has been made. A witness described seeing a thin man less than 6 feet tall and wearing a black jacket with silver or gold embroidery running from the scene.
Bice said Yong Sun was working to bring his wife and 6-year-old son to the United States. His parents are in their 70s, she said.
"He was sending money home every month, and the wife told me she is very worried because she has just lost her job," Bice said.
Yong Sun was from Shandong, a seacoast province in eastern China just west of South Korea.
