Poll gives McDonnell lead in hypothetical governor matchups

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell leads all three potential Democratic opponents by 10 percentage points or more, according to a poll released yesterday.

The poll of 500 likely voters taken Wednesday by Rasmussen Reports shows McDonnell leading former Del. Brian J. Moran of Alexandria, 44 percent to 34 percent.

McDonnell defeats former Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe 45 percent to 33 percent and state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds of Bath County 45 percent to 30 percent.

Democrats will nominate their candidate June 9 in a primary. McDonnell has no competition for the GOP nomination.

The Rasmussen Report says the Democratic primary competition may be affecting the general election poll. Some primary supporters of each candidate may be unwilling to vote for the nominee of their party if their favored candidate is not selected, Scott Rasmussen says.

The poll's margin of error was plus or minus 4.5 percentage points. -- Tyler Whitley
