Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones has joined a bipartisan coalition focused on making cities safer by cracking down on illegal guns.
Jones said today he signed on to Mayors Against Illegal Guns during a recent meeting with New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. Bloomberg is co-chairman with Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino.
The coalition started in 2006 and has grown to more than 340 mayors representing more than 55 million people. Its statement of principles has been endorsed by the United States Conference of Mayors and the National League of Cities.
"Protecting the citizens of Richmond is a responsibility that I take very seriously," Jones said in a statement. "Preventing criminals from illegally obtaining and using guns is an important step toward building a first class city."
Other Virginia mayors in the coalition are William Euille of Alexandria, Paul D. Fraim of Norfolk, Annie M. Mickens of Petersburg and James W. Holley III of Portsmouth. -- Will Jones
