Two days after Brian Moran declared during the first Democratic gubernatorial debate that he would support a repeal of Virginia's ban on same-sex marriage if elected, the Virginia Partisans Gay and Lesbian Democratic Club is backing his bid for governor.
“Throughout his career, he’s fought alongside us -- not just in his voting record, but also in the leadership positions he has taken in support of equality,” Partisans President Charley Conrad said. “And even now, during this campaign, he continues to push pro-equality positions, despite any potential political risk. The LGBT community is standing firmly with Brian because he has always stood up for us.”
Moran's primary opponents, Sen. R. Creigh Deeds and former Democratic National Committee chair Terry McAuliffe, said in Sunday's debate that they oppose the “Marshall-Newman” amendment passed in 2006, but they stopped short of saying they would work to repeal it.
Amending the state's constitution requires that the proposed change be approved by two General Assemblies with a House election in between.
“Equality is a fundamental value that makes us Democrats,” Moran said. “Virginians know where I will stand on this issue because they know where I have stood. Leadership isn’t easy.”
Moran supports contract rights for LGBT Virginians including domestic partnership benefits and hospital visitation rights.
