Pat Robertson, the founder and president of Regent University, announced today his plan to retire as president effective July 1, 2010.

Robertson, who founded the Virginia Beach university in 1978 and became its sixth president in 2000, will continue to serve as the university's chancellor and member of the board of trustees, according to a school news release.

The board has appointed a search committee to find a new president who they would like to join the school no later than fall 2010.

"Regent University is blessed to have reached many milestones, both academically and in the spiritual development of our community," Robertson said in a release.

"Our mission remains steadfast: to train Christian leaders who serve with excellence in every area of their lives. I have seen that excellence firsthand and I know that we have only just begun to see the fruits of our labor."
