Rep. Eric I. Cantor, R-7th, and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., announced the launch today of a new organization, National Council for a New America, to solicit ideas for dealing with problems facing the nation.
In a conference call with reporters, McCain described Cantor as "the driving force" behind the organization.
Cantor said the council wants to bring Democrats, independents and Republicans to a national discussion of issues, although the initial participants are Republican leaders in Congress.
Through forums, Internet technology and other means, the council wants to start "a national conversation" about the economy, health care, education, energy and national security, Cantor said.
Cantor and McCain denied the council is a Republican forum designed to rebrand the party, which has suffered recent electoral losses.
"No one appreciates more than I do" the party's recent election difficulties, said McCain, who lost the presidential race last year.
