A Franklin County judge has been named to hear lawsuits filed by the families of two students slain in the mass shootings at Virginia Tech.
Virginia Supreme Court Senior Justice Harry Carrico last week named Circuit Court Judge William Alexander to preside over the case.
Alexander was named because all of the Montgomery County judges recused themselves.
The lawsuits by the families of Erin Peterson and Julia Pryde were transferred to Montgomery County from Fairfax County in June.
The families are suing the state, Virginia Tech and university and mental health officials, seeking $10 million in damages. Also named as a defendant is the estate of Seung-Hui Cho, the student gunman who killed 32 people before taking his own life in April 2007. -- The Associated Press
